ABOUT ME
Welcome!
My name is Debra Giles and I am in my 12th year of teaching at Landrum High School in District 1. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English and my Masters in Teaching from Converse College. These past 12 years have been busy ones as I worked to obtain National Board certification, Advanced Placement Language certification, Advanced Placement Literature certification, and Gifted and Talented endorsement.
I entered the teaching profession after spending many years at home raising my children. After becoming familiar with the district through volunteering and being a District 1 parent, I cannot imagine teaching anywhere else. Both of my boys, Matthew and Timothy, are products of District 1 schools and they both received outstanding educations that enabled them attend the colleges of their choice. They are now pursuing careers they love. My husband David and I live on Lake Bowen in the New Prospect community. We recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. There is no way I could pursue my dream of teaching without his love and support. He is there early in the morning as I rush to get out of the door, handing me coffee and my lunch. He is there when I come home late, often with dinner waiting. People who say they envy teachers’ hours have obviously never taught. While the hours may be long, the fulfillment I receive from teaching is amazing. I love being with my students and credit them with keeping me young at heart. Never a day goes by that they do not teach me something and make me laugh. And I hope that never a day goes by that they do not feel accepted and valued as they walk through the door of my classroom. If you are reading this as a parent, thank you for sharing your precious child with me and for entrusting me to care for him or her as I would my own child. If you are reading this as a student, please know I am on your side. Anything I do or say in class or out I am doing or saying to help you safely navigate your way through a world that can, at times, be treacherous and unforgiving. With the right tools, however, it can be a world fill with promises and possibilities. Let’s work together to obtain those tools. - Mrs. giles |
